Meet our newest staff member, Amabie!

Amabie is a Japanese Yokai who emerged from the ocean in 1846 and foretold of six years of wonderful harvest alongside a terrible plague. The plague, could be fended off by drawing their image and sharing it with others.

Here at Milktooth, Amabie welcomes every visitor and keeps them safe, while they do their important creative work.

We had our first milktooth fall out at Milktooth!

We often get asked what the name Milktooth means. For us, it’s about honouring growth and change and investing in constant renewal. How can we move from being children to young adults while retaining our sense of wonder and creative spirit?

One of our art heroes, Lynda Barry talked about the same idea in a quote we only just recently read:

“Daily practice with images both written and drawn is rare once we have lost our baby teeth and begin to think of ourselves as good at some things and bad at other things. It’s not that this isn’t true . . . but the side effects are profound once we abandon a certain activity like drawing because we are bad at it. A certain state of mind . . . is also lost. A certain capacity of the mind is shuttered and for most people, it stays that way for life.”

We’re getting ready to blast off this afternoon, with the first classes for term 3! 🚀

Our Comics Quest course is heading to the stars as we explore science fiction stories.

These two illustrations we drew are from the same prompt, an astronaut waiting on the launch pad for clearance to take off. They’re rendered in completely different styles though, demonstrating how the choices we make as artists can lead to very different experiences for the audience.

It's strange to look at the 2020 that was meant to be and see how much has changed.

Milktooth was scheduled to be at San Diego Comic Con this weekend to launch Campbell's graphic novel, Home Time II: Beyond the Weaving.

Instead, we'll have to settle for reminiscing about the 2017 Con, when we got to see Home Time I in print for the first time.
