Description

✨The Precision and Skill of Maria Merian✨

Join painter and textile artist Elizabeth Marruffo as she guides you through precision painting and embroidery techniques. From working with watercolour and ink to learning advanced embroidery processes, this eight week course provides students with a deep understanding of the way a traditional artist worked.

This term we will continue to study botanical watercolour techniques as we look at the famous botanical illustrations of the scientist and artist Maria Merian. She was famous for documenting the metamorphosis of insects at a time when those around her believed insects emerged from the mud.

Her luminous and detailed studies of plants, flowers, bugs and butterflies will be looked at in detail as we work on our own line studies, tonal studies and a finished watercolour copy of one of her works.

This term we will also learn advanced embroidery techniques to create a soft, shimmering and fluffy textile sculpture of one of Merian’s moths or butterflies

Students should expect to develop their mastery of watercolour processes and techniques as well as practice a variety of embroidery techniques to create a realistic looking moth or butterfly.

Our small class ratio of 8 students to a teacher, means that each student will get the feedback and attention they need in order to achieve their best outcome.
